Gunpowder tea is a form of tea in which each leaf has been rolled into a small round pellet. Its English name comes from its resemblance to grains of gunpowder. This rolling method of shaping tea is most often applied either to dried green tea (the most commonly encountered variety outside China) or oolong tea. The leaves of this green tea are rolled into the shape of little pinhead pellets resembling gunpowder, hence its name. Gunpowder green tea tastes bold & lightly smoky, also lending to its name. Gunpowder tea leaves stay fresh longer than any other green tea leaves due to its compressed form.

Gunpowder tea production dates back to the Tang Dynasty 618 - 907. It was first introduced to Taiwan in the nineteenth century. Gunpowder tea leaves are withered, steamed, rolled, and then dried. Although the individual leaves were formerly rolled by hand, today all but the highest grade gunpowder teas are rolled by machines. Rolling renders the leaves less susceptible to physical damage and breakage and allows them to retain more of their flavor and aroma.

Arguably Gunpowder tea is the most popular tea in the world and we have seen Chinese Gunpowder being enjoyed in rural West Africa, the Bazaars and Souks of North Africa (see also Moroccan Mint Green Tea) as well as in some of the finest tea houses in Paris, London and the rest of the UK.

In conclusion, the gunpowder green tea benefits are quite numerous. The Chinese green tea has a light smokey taste to it, and many people mix it with other types of tea to create unique high quality flavours. A popular mixture people like to brew includes gunpowder green tea and spearmint tea. Its quite commonly known as Morrocan Mint Tea.

These gunpowder green tea grade are 9374 and 9375.
