Tea fannings cost much less in comparison to the whole leaf or broken leaf teas which are considered the premium Tea and hence the fannings become the product of mass consumption.Fannings are commonly associated with the tea used in commercially produced tea bags. The tea is ground and sifted, with the finished tea leaves being only slightly larger than standard ground black pepper. Fannings are small pieces tea that are left over after higher grades of teas are gathered to be sold, the fannings of expensive teas can still be more expensive and more flavorful than whole leaves of cheaper tea.
