Gunpowder green tea (Loose Leaf) is a form of Chinese green tea in which the tea leaf is rolled into a small, round pellet. In particular, the tea leaves are withered, steamed, rolled and then dried. The leaves of this green tea are rolled into the shape of little pinhead pellets resembling gunpowder, hence its name. Tastes bold & lightly smoky. Gunpowder Green (Loose Leaf) brews mellow and layered, with a deep, smoky flavor profile.

To make this tea each silvery green tea is withered, fired and then rolled into a tiny ball, a technique perfected over centuries to preserve freshness. Once in the cup with hot water added, the leaves of the shiny pellets unfurl back into life. The liquor is yellow, with a strong, honeyed and slightly smoky flavour that lingers on the palate.

Shiny pellets indicate that the tea is relatively fresh. Pellet size is also associated with quality, larger pellets being considered a mark of lower quality tea. High quality gunpowder tea will have small, tightly rolled pellets. The tea is divided into several grades using a combination of numbers and letters. As an example 3505AAA is considered the highest grade.

Our gunpowder green tea mainly have 3505, 3505A, 3505AA, 3505AAA.

Brewing methods

While brewing methods vary widely by tea and individual preferences, 1 teaspoon of loose leaf tea is recommended for every 150 ml (5.07 oz) of water. Ideal water temperature for this type of tea is between 70°C (158 °F) and 80 °C (176 °F). For the first and second brewing, leaves should be steeped for around one minute. It is also recommended that the tea cup or tea pot used be rinsed with hot water prior to brewing the tea to warm the vessels. When brewed, gunpowder tea is a yellow color.
